We started our tour in Kagurazaka, a charming neighborhood known for its unique blend of French and Japanese culture. As we walked through the narrow streets, our tour leader pointed out several European-style restaurants that beautifully incorporated Japanese elements in their design and menus. We also visited the old geisha district, where we learned about the traditional ryotei (Japanese-style restaurants) that still preserve the refined atmosphere of the past. After that, we stopped by the Akagi Shrine, was especially associated with women, and many came to pray for things like love, beauty, marriage, and safe childbirth. Because of this, it was sometimes called a “women’s guardian shrine.” where we offered prayers and made wishes for good luck, followed by a visit to the , a peaceful Buddhist temple with a rich history. To end the tour, we went to cozy café, enjoying delicious French pastries while chatting about Japanese culture and the day’s experiences. Kagurazaka is a quiet corner of Tokyo, just minutes from Shinjuku, but it feels a world away. Walking through its narrow, cobblestone alleys, you can still sense its old geisha history and traditional restaurants tucked behind wooden gates. At the same time, small cafés, bakeries, and shops mix in, giving the area a cozy and nice vibe.

It wasn’t overly crowded but it was definitely a popular area. The shrines were beautiful and the street food was really nice. I enjoyed visiting shops, appreciating the parisian scenery, and the side streets reminiscent of old Japan. We were even lucky enough to spot a famous Japanese actor filming down a side street!

Amy curated the tour based off my interests and showed me a lot of local spots I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. We explored pottery shops, specialty cloth stores, bakeries, a cat post stop, and cafes!

There was never a dull moment on my tour! The three hours went by very pleasantly, with frequent stops at historic landmarks, cafés, and bakeries. I got to learn the history behind this fascinating Tokyo district as well, something I wouldn’t have known without a local tour guide.
