Mastering Solo Female Travel in Japan: Safety, Tips, and Recommendations

Is Japan safe for female solo travelers? The answer is a definite yes. It is one of the safest countries in the world (and many travelers comment it as THE safest one), and is safer than many tourist countries.

How safe is it to travel in Japan now?

I have lived in Japan alone for more than five years without having acquaintances or family here. Even before moving, I had visited Japan several times as a traveler.

I wouldn’t say I’ve never encountered any issues or safety concerns, which would either be untrue or simply a matter of luck, especially for many women. However, overall, I do believe Japan is generally a safe country to travel in.

While basic awareness and common-sense precautions are always important anywhere in the world, there is no need for special safety measures or extraordinary preparations when traveling here.

In this article, I will share practical tips for female solo travelers and recommend activities that help you make friends and engage with local culture.

Practical Tips for Female Solo Travelers in Japan

For first-time female solo travelers, here are a few practical tips to help you feel less overwhelmed. These suggestions will also help you better understand Japanese culture and respond appropriately to unexpected situations, allowing you to avoid unnecessary trouble and navigate cultural differences with confidence.

Avoid staying in areas with many nightclubs or izakayas:
It is common to stay in neighborhoods where there are a few bars or izakayas. However, before booking your accommodation, I recommend checking the surrounding area on the map to see whether there is a high concentration of nightlife venues nearby, as you may encounter intoxicated people late at night.

Say no to nanpa on the streets or in nightlife areas:
Nanpa is a Japanese term referring to the practice of hitting on women in busy locations such as beaches, nightlife districts, or tourist areas. Solo foreign female travelers may be approached more frequently. If someone makes you uncomfortable or tries to initiate unwanted conversation, it is best to politely decline and walk away immediately.

Avoid over-indulgence in alcohol:
Going out to bars or clubs can be a fun way to meet people while traveling alone. However, try to avoid excessive drinking, especially if you are unfamiliar with the language or area, as it may make situations harder to manage.

Stay in well-lit and populated areas:
When walking at night, choose streets that are bright and busy whenever possible, and avoid isolated alleys or poorly lit routes.

Suggested Activities for Female Solo Travelers in Japan

The topic of where to travel alone in Japan has been widely discussed. However, the activities that solo travelers can participate in, particularly those that help them meet friends or engage with local communities, have not been fully explored.

Japan offers numerous experiences, and here are a few that are safe, immersive, and ideal for female solo travelers seeking meaningful interaction with local culture and people.

Tea Ceremony Experience
A private or group tea ceremony is often one of the first experiences that comes to mind when thinking about Japanese culture. For solo travelers, I especially recommend joining a group tea ceremony, as it provides opportunities to meet fellow travelers while interacting with the host or hostess of the teahouse with an affordable price. These ceremonies typically take place in traditional teahouses or temples, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and cultural setting.

Kintsugi Experience
A kintsugi experience involves learning how to repair broken pottery using gold, transforming imperfections into beauty. During this workshop, you can join either a group or private session led by a skilled instructor and create your own kintsugi piece within a few hours. It is an easy souvenir to take home and is usually conducted in English-friendly environments.

Zazen Experience
A zazen meditation experience is one of my personal top recommendations for anyone seeking an authentic and spiritually enriching activity in Japan. It is safe, immersive, and calming. In a typical group session, you will meet a monk, receive a brief introduction and temple tour, enjoy traditional matcha, and participate in guided Buddhist meditation practice.
